Captain Leroy Schreiber of the 56th Fighter Group was part of the withdrawal escort for the 8th Air Force's costly raid on Bremen when he sighted a straggling B-17 being stalked by a Focke-Wulf. The B-17's tail gunner had been knocked out of action and only Schreiber's quick intervention, which resulted in the Fw-190's shootdown, saved the fortress.
